SHANG ZHEXING
Shang Zhexing was born in Henan, China in 2000. He received his BFA degree from School of Visual Arts in New York and completed his MFA at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His practice begins with the immediate and intimate material qualities evoked by graphite and charcoal. The marks they leave on paper carry an irreversible weight. Yet this weight is not static; it is interrupted and redirected in moments of spontaneity, giving rise to flowing lines, shifting shapes, and biomorphic imagery. These interventions—accidental and momentary—cause the image to oscillate between heaviness and lightness. In his work, heaviness manifests as a sense of volume and pressure, the tactile thickness of the medium’s trace, and the emotional deposits rooted in childhood memories of drawing and early visual impressions. It holds the psychological weight of the individual shaped by sociocultural contexts. Lightness, in contrast, emerges in the fluid transitions between forms—from order to disorder—enabling brief moments of freedom and generative openness through chance. Through the juxtaposition and interaction of divergent forms, boundaries are constantly touched and rewritten—the relationships between norm and deviation, become visible in tension. His images provoke this ongoing dialogue within the interplay of these dual forces.
